Acupuncture is a form of complementary medicine. It has been around for over 3,000 years & is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine.
In an acupuncture treatment, very fine needles are inserted in to specific locations on the body to promote healing. Don't be surprised if the needles are in completely different areas of your body from your main area of concern.
Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. Some of the issues that it is known to treat effectively include chronic pain & inflammation, poor sleep, tinnitus, dizziness, digestive concerns, menstrual issues, & stress & anxiety. Acupuncture has even been shown to have positive effects on the immune function!
Yes!
Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment when performed by a licensed & trained practitioner using sterile needles.
It is important to be completely honest about your health & health history. Remember to disclose any medical conditions or medications you are taking to your practitioner before beginning your treatments. Your acupuncturist will be working with the information you give them, so it's best to make sure that that information is accurate.
When choosing an acupuncture practitioner, it is important to look for someone who is licensed & trained in acupuncture. Check with the licensing board in your area to be sure the practitioner you intend to visit is fully qualified.
You may also want to read reviews or ask for recommendations from friends or family members who have had acupuncture before. It is also important that you feel comfortable with your acupuncturist.
At pHw we offer free 15 minute "get to know us" sessions that allow you to meet with our acupuncturists before you begin treatments.
It is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing to your acupuncture session. It is also best to avoid eating a heavy meal or consuming alcohol or caffeine before your appointment. However, it is a good idea to have eaten something a few hours before your appointment ... you don't want to have a treatment on a completely empty stomach.
During an acupuncture session, you will usually sit or lie down in a comfortable position while the acupuncturist inserts thin needles into various points on your body. You may feel a slight prick or a sensation of warmth, tingling or heaviness - these are all quite common sensations. The acupuncturist will then let you relax for about 15-30 minutes before the needles are removed.
If you have any questions or concerns before, during or after your treatment, your acupuncturist at pHw will be happy to chat with you about them.
Lots of insurance plans now cover acupuncture.
However, there are many insurance companies with numerous plan options ... we cannot know the details of all of these options. It is best to check with your provider to see if acupuncture is covered under your specific plan.
